Dear Friends,

At our meeting last week we received reports about the process of establishing cut-off scores for the SoL tests, and what the raw scores look like for our own schools. Tomorrow evening (Tuesday, 10/27) the school system will be presenting a forum for the public about these tests and the associated standards, and what they mean for the schools and students and community. It is co-sponsored by the Teachers' Association, the County Council of PTA's, and the school system. It will be held at Christiansburg High School at 7pm. If you have questions or want more information about this important change in the educational process in the state, please attend!

Tonight (Monday, 10/26 at 7pm) the Board of Supervisors will again consider whether to support the idea of having 2 middle schools in Blacksburg and to move ahead with the purchase of land for a new middle school. They will also consider the School Board's request for funding for the contract on the new HS in Elliston/Shawsville. The bid we are recommending for acceptance came in under the costs that had been anticipated. I believe that at this point the only real issue is whether to include or not include an auxiliary gym, which would add some $450,000 to the project. The SB has made the case that it is needed for school functions, and community groups have made the case that it is also needed for added indoor recreational opportunities in that part of the county.

The discussion of class size, scheduled for our last meeting, had to be delayed due to the number of other issues on the agenda, and will be discussed instead at our next meeting, on election day.

Please remember to vote!

Jim Klagge
Chair, and District F Representative
Montgomery County School Board.
