Dear Friends,
Sorry for the 4 month lapse in newsletters. Hope you are having a peaceful and
productive summer.
My main reason for writing now is to remind you of the groundbreaking for the new middle school in Blacksburg on Tuesday (August 8th) at 5pm at the Prices Fork Road site, next to Kipps. This has been a long time in coming, and not without its controversy. But it is finally happening nonetheless, and the public is invited. After the decision was finally made and approved, I think the community has gotten behind this plan, so I look forward to a continued show of support. The issue you might have read about recently--whether the structure has been designed too tall--will either be allowed or changed. In either case the school will go forward. The height limit is to maintain the residential character of the area, but as the town realizes, the higher roof height (due to the pitched roof) allows a shingled roof that actually has a more residential character than the flat or metal roof that would be required by the lower height. So there is no doubt that this can be worked out satisfactorily. I will not sermonize about this "historic" occasion, but will save that for Tuesday!
Progress is continuing for the "sister" middle school to be built in Christiansburg starting next year.
You may have read that David McCrumb will be resigning his seat on the school board effective October 1, 2000. He represents District C--which covers parts of Christiansburg as well as Shawsville, Elliston, Lafayette, Ironto, etc. The school board has initiated a process to appoint a replacement for him. The term runs through the end of 2001. Those interested in being considered for appointment should contact the school board clerk for further details (Anita Johnston--382-5138 or Lisa McAlexander--382-5104). Applicants will be asked to submit a letter of interest of less than 300 words, and a resume. Applicants will be interviewed by the board in September, there will be a public hearing about applicants the last week of September, and then the appointment will be made at our first meeting in October. If you know people from this district that would be good candidates, please encourage them to submit an application. If you are unsure whether you live in District C, call the county voter registrar at 382-5741.
For those of you who have pleaded with me over the years for shorter newsletters--this one's for you!
-Jim Klagge
Chair, and District F representative
Montgomery County School Board.
