I apologize for the lack of e-mail corespondence, however, there has been little activity that I would consider critical since my joining the Board. The following questions are emerging now, though, given recent developments:
1) We are exploring joining the Governor's School located in Pulaski County. This would allow anywhere between 8 and 16 students to attend the school in the mornings and return to their MC home schools in the afternoons. I believe there is support for this on the Board, and we will be finalizing this plan, and setting up an application procedure over the next year. Stay tuned if interested.

2) We will be hiring a number of high level administrators in the system this year. Fred Morton will be leaving for the top job in Henrico as of the end of August, and three major principal slots will be opening this year due to retirements, Christiansburg High, Blacksburg High, and Blacksburg Middle Schools. We have hired Jim Sellers to fill in in the interim; he has a lot of experience in Montgomery County, and it appears we are lucky to get his help. My primary concern is that parents be able to participate if they are interested, and we will be trying a number of things to generate public involvement in the hiring process during the fall. If you are interested in being involved please let me know. In fact, I'd love to hear from you in any event about the types of candidates we should look for.
I think Fred Morton has improved conditions here in Montgomery County Schools significantly during his seven year tenure. While I have visited PTAs in my strand, and visited most of the schools as well, and have heard of and seen problems to address, my general impression is that things are going relatively well. We on the Board are upbeat, despite losing Fred, and believe that we will be able to attrract excellent candidates for our administrative vacancies. We were also able to address successfully some teacher salary issues that had been left over from previous budget years due to last year's state budget compromise. Do you have any issues or concerns that you wish to pass along? Please let me know. Doug
